Rezum your life with the new minimally invasive treatment option for your BPH concerns

Dr Elmes now offers his patients this new minimally invasive BPH treatment that provides safe, fast and effective treatment for unpleasant urinary outflow symptoms many ageing men in Australia experience.

The prevalence of this progressive, non-cancerous disease affects approximately fifty per cent of men aged in their 50s and 80 per cent of men aged in their 80s. It is a disease men should not ignore but rather seek advice on the various minimally invasive treatment options they have available to them, such as the Rezum system.

As opposed to older style more invasive techniques such as TURP, the Rezum system works by heating water vapour and delivering it to the enlarged gland, where it transfers heat to the extra prostate tissue to gently and immediately damage the cells and overtime cause cell death reducing irritative BPH symptoms such as frequency, urgency, irregular flow, weak stream, straining and nocturia. Over time, your body will absorb the treated tissue through its natural healing response. Most patients begin to experience symptom relief in as soon as 2 weeks with maximum benefit occurring in 3 months. The below images show the process of steam being applied with a hand held device to the excessive prostatic tissue and the post procedure result of the damaged cells resulting in the urethra passage opening.

The Rezum technique and device used is what differs this style of treatment to others that Dr Elmes offers. All techniques reduce BPH symptoms from clearing the obstructive prostatic tissue but for Rezum the steam being applied to the tissue results in damaged cell growth overtime. The alternate techniques are HoLEP (holmium laser enucleation), which removes the tissue with the use of a high powered laser , and the other option compresses the prostatic tissue to allow for ease of urinary flow, known as UroLift. What these three procedures have in common is that they are minimally invasive, result in less bleeding, shorter hospital stay, minimal reoperation rate, and faster recovery than older style procedures.

The below animation provides a great visual on how the Rezum system works.
